How do you normally send files to a friend? By email? What if the file is rather big but you want to send it anyway? You could setup a FTP server and give your friend access to it. The speed that your friends or contacts can download with depends of course on your upload speed. Users with access can also upload files to the server if you authorize them for this. The speed here depends on their upload bandwidth and your system’s download speed in this case.

Still, FTP servers are the number one method to exchange large files with a limited number of contacts.

The best thing, it’s not complicated to setup your own FTP server, just follow these easy steps:

• Download filezilla server, install and run it.
• Create a folder on one of the hard drives connected to your computer, e.g. /ftp/.
• Move or copy the files you want to trade to the directory.
• You need to setup a user account so your friend may connect to the server, to do so select edit > users.
• If you prefer to use groups instead, click edit > groups first. Multiple users can be added to groups which makes it easier to manage these users and also means that you won’t have to complete the same configuration steps individually for each user as they inherit some settings from the group instead.

  Setting up a quick FTP server with Linux shouldn’t be too difficult. From there, your friend would need to either port forward the FTP port, and then you would connect to his IP address and that port (so like 201.24.124.15:21).

  If Windows would be being used for the FTP server, I have no idea on the set-up process for that, but I’m certain instructions exist for this. From there, the same process applies (forward the port, connect to IP:Port).

  Another option might be to use a VPN and then try using standard Windows networking tools and/or SMB (Unix) to just transfer the files.

  For another option, a web server could also work for a quick solution (your friend would just need to toss up a quick Apache server, forward a port, and you’d connect in a similar manner through a browser (if a port other than 80 is used; IP:Port applies; if using standard 80, than just IP is needed).

  And depending on how often you’d want to access files, file sizes, bandwidth, and time; you could also just transfer files with a cloud service like MEGA.

  File Transfer Protocol is a set of protocols that the networked computers use to talk over the internet. In more simple terms, it is a way to connect two computers and move files between them. FTP allows new web pages that are created by an individual to show up on the internet. It allows the web pages to transfer to the server so that others can access them.

  Using an FTP client we can upload, download, delete, move, rename and copy the file on a server. If you send your file through FTP then your files mainly perform upload or download from the FTP server. When you are uploading the files then you are transferring the files to the server from your personal computer and when you are downloading the file you are transferring the file from the server to your personal computer.

  How does File Transfer Protocol work?

  FTP is a client-server protocol and it relies on two communication channels between the client and the server.

  1. Control Connection: The FTP client, for example, FileZilla or FileZilla Pro sends a connection request usually to server port number 21. This is the control connection. It is used for sending and receiving commands and responses. Typically a user needs to log on to the FTP server for establishing the connection but there are some servers that make all their content available without login. These servers are known as anonymous FTP.
  2. Data Connection: For transferring the files and folder we use a separate connection called data connection.

  Why Another FTP Downloader?

  There are millions of FTP programs. Why write another one?
  The answer is simple: I searched for a tool for my special needs, and I couldn’t find one.

  I’m sharing a Dreambox with a friend. The dreambox is a digital DVB satellite receiver that runs Linux with a built in harddisk.
  The dreambox has a Web interface that can be used to program timer recordings via Internet from anywhere in the world.
  It also has an FTP server via which you can download the films from the harddisk once they are recorded.
  The Dreambox can be completely remote-controlled via Internet. (Obviously you need DynDns and an open FTP and HTTP port in your router)
  So if you live in Brazil and have a friend in Germany who has a dreambox, you can remotely record the German television program and later download it.
  You can also use a dreambox to share a Pay-TV subscription with a friend.

  Normally if you want to record a film which starts at 20:00 and ends at 22:00, you will program a timer from 21:55 till 22:30 to be sure that you don’t miss anything if the transmission starts delayed. But a DVB stream creates between 20 and 50 Megabytes per minute (depending on the TV channel’s bitrate). So it would be a great advantage if you can download only the interesting part. To download only the film and exclude the news and advertising I needed a preview function. My friend complained that I was occupying all his DSL upstream to load the films. So additionally a bandwidth control and a download scheduler were required.
